How To Unclog Floor Drain In Basement

how to unclog floor drain in basementYour basement floor drain is the final stop of all the waste materials that pass through your drain pipes. This is the spot where they all meet before finally being transported to your septic tank or the public sewer where your home is connected to. With that said, clogging is not surprising at all. Because of the basement floor drain’s exposure to different types of wastes, it often ends up clogged, leaving you nothing but inconvenience. Fortunately, it is not difficult at all to clear a nasty blockage. To do this properly, follow this DIY guide:

1. Since you’ll be dealing with a dirty drain pipe, you’ll have to protect yourself from bacteria. Wear a pair of rubber gloves and then gather your tools. You’ll need a plumbing snake, a bucket, soap, salt, baking soda and vinegar. You’ll need tap water and hot water as well.

2. Take a look at your basement floor drain. Is there standing water on the floor? If there is, get a bucket and scoop it out.

3. Now locate your clean-out. It will give you easy access to the drain pipe and also allow you to remove the clog without any trouble.

4. There’s supposed to be a lid that covers the clean-out. Carefully remove it using your wrench.

5. Once you have access to the clean-out, prep your plumbing snake. If you don’t have one, you can either buy or rent one from plumbing supply and equipment shops.

6. Insert the end of the snake into the pipe. Pour half a bucket of water to add pressure to the tool. Doing so will also help wash away the dirt, sediments and scum that linger inside the pipe. Turn the crank of the snake clockwise to keep pushing it in. Insert it all the way and wait until you locate the blockage.

7. When you reach some sort of resistance, just continue on pushing the snake in. That’s the clog so try to break it into smaller pieces with the help of the plumbing snake. Push on the tool a little to destroy the clog. Repeat this process until you no longer feel

8. If, on the other hand, you can no longer break the clog, pull the snake out slowly. Check if you have hooked the substances out. If you’ve caught some waste materials, dispose them properly.

9.  Keep on snaking the drain pipe until you clear it. When you’re done, pour hot water into the pipe to wash away the remaining waste materials.
