Five critical plumbing mistakes to avoid during kitchen remodeling

Planning a kitchen remodel can be hectic. After all, the kitchen is the heart of your home. It’s a room that must be functional as well as comfortable. It’s critical to get the planning right, especially regarding the plumbing. Here are five costly plumbing mistakes to avoid when it comes to kitchen remodeling.

1. Choosing the cabinets and countertops before the sink

Many homeowners make the mistake of selecting their cabinets and countertops first and worrying about the sink later. This can leave you with a sink that’s the wrong size or doesn’t fit the location of the pipes. It may even require the countertops or cabinets to be cut in order to accommodate the ill-fitting sink.

It’s always best to start with the sink – then the contractor can leave the proper space and ensure the pipe connections are in the right place. This will save time, money and frustration.

2. Using the wrong pipes

Not getting the plumbing right can lead to increased costs. Using mismatched pipes and fixtures can result in leaks, as well as low water pressure. Mismatched pipes can also lead to corrosion, causing your plumbing to break down prematurely.

Also, avoid connecting too many fixtures to a single set of pipes. Multiple fixtures can overwhelm your system and lead to low water pressure.

3. Not venting the sink

Plumbing vents are specially designed pipes that direct sewer gases outside the home. They also allow oxygen to enter the pipes to break down waste and maintain drainage pressure. Without them, your home can be subjected to poisonous and smelly gases and create slow and sluggish drains.

4. Separating the sink and the dishwasher

The sink and the dishwasher will require access to hot and cold water supply lines. You’ll also need a drainage pipe for both. The good news is that the sink and dishwasher can share the same water lines and drainage pipe. Separating these features from your kitchen will require extra plumbing lines that can be expensive and inefficient.

Keep the sink next to the dishwasher, and you’ll avoid paying for an additional plumbing hookup.

5. Not hiring a professional plumber

You may think you can save money by doing the plumbing on a kitchen renovation yourself or by hiring an unlicensed plumber willing to do the job for cheap.

The truth is you could be in for a more expensive project in the long run. Too much can go wrong with an inexperienced or unlicensed plumber.

Hiring a professional, licensed plumber ensures the work will be done to a significant level of quality. This saves money in the long run by avoiding expensive repairs and ensuring you have quality plumbing work that will stand the test of time.

You’ll have this kitchen for a long time. Don’t rely on inexperienced, unlicensed plumbers who could cause you thousands of dollars in damages in the coming years.
