Are my dishwasher drain lines improperly installed?

Dishwashers can be an indispensable time-saver for any kitchen, but like any modern appliance, their convenience is solely based on how they function. To ensure a dishwasher runs as smoothly and efficiently as possible, it is imperative its drain lines are properly installed and maintained.

Next time you have a load of dishes, you can follow these tips from Plumbers 911 to ensure your appliance is running at its full capacity.

If you don’t have time or our tips seem too complicated, contact Plumbers 911 to be referred to a licensed professional who can handle the job.

Investigate the design

Dishwashers are designed to have a high-loop installation to prevent backflow of water, so make sure that the drain hose is looped up above the level of the sink drain and securely fastened to the underside of the countertop.

Some styles also utilize an air gap to prevent contaminated water from re-entering the dishwasher. If your dishwasher has an air gap, make sure it is properly installed above the sink and not obstructed to allow proper air circulation.

If your dishwasher is connected to a garbage disposal unit, ensure that the connection is secure and free from blockages in order to facilitate smooth drainage.

Observe the water drainage

The draining process should ideally be relatively quiet, indicating a smooth flow of water through properly installed drain lines. Unusual noises, such as gurgling or loud sucking sounds, may suggest air gaps or clogs and be a sign of improper installation.

Additionally, standing water at the bottom of the dishwasher or lingering water around the drain after a cycle may indicate a problem. Properly installed drain lines allow water to flow out seamlessly, leaving your dishes both clean and dry.

Check for leaks

Leaks can occur if the drain lines are not securely connected or if there are cracks in the lines. Inspect the area around and beneath the dishwasher for any signs of water leaks, as well as in the cabinet under the sink for any water accumulation or dampness.

You may want to schedule regular maintenance checks on your dishwasher, including inspecting the drain lines, to remove any debris or buildup that may accumulate over time.
