Your bathroom or shower tiles’ beauty won’t last forever. Yes, you read that right. While it is true that proper care and maintenance mostly lengthen their appeal and good condition, we cannot disregard the fact that the exposure to constant wetness and other factors result to deterioration over time. Even if you care enough for your bathroom, you just won’t prevent the tiles from incurring scratches or getting chipped off. You also won’t avoid the grout getting worn out and ugly. Fortunately, it is not troublesome to regrout the bathroom and make it look as if it’s new again. With simple tools and supplies, you should be able to give your tiles’ luster back. Here’s a detailed DIY guide to assist you!
1. Check on your tiles’ joint or that space between them where grout is applied. Is it more than 1/8 inch? If it is, then you should use a sanded grout to be able to fill the spaces better. Otherwise, you should stick with the non-sanded type.
2. Prepare your tools and supplies. You’ll need a tile sealant, the grout mixture, a margin trowel, a rubber grout float, a tile sponge, caulk and also a couple of buckets.
3. Once you have your materials ready, it’s time to remove the existing, ugly grout. Do it carefully, without scratching or chipping off the tiles.
4. When the old grout is removed, get a sponge and cautiously wipe the tiles with a single coating of your tile sealant. Let it dry for about 24 hours to make sure that the grout will stick effectively. The sealant will prevent the new grout from sinking so don’t forget to apply it.
5. After 24 hours, proceed with the grout application. Get a bucket and mix your grout in there with the help of your margin trowel. It’s a small tool that’s mostly used in masonry and functions well on applying paste-like materials on surfaces.
6. When you’re done with the mixture, generously apply grout on the joints with the use of your rubber grout float. Fill them all up with the exception of the areas between the bathtub and your floor tiles, door, wall, as well as your vanity cabinet (or sink).
7. After applying the grout, take time to remove all the excess, again with the use of your rubber grout float. Simply move it in a diagonal direction and scrape all the excess off. Once done, leave the tiles alone for about 10 full minutes. This amount of time will let the material set.
8. While waiting, get another bucket and fill it with water. With the use of your tile sponge, clean the flooring. Do this by simply dipping the sponge into the water then wringing it out. Your sponge should only be damp instead of totally wet and dripping. Clean the surfaces by wiping all the residues off the tiles. Repeat this process until all the areas are taken care of.
9. When you’re done cleaning, leave the tiles alone this time for 24 up to 48 hours. This will allow the grout to cure. Wait until the new grout is totally dry before proceeding with caulking.
10. Start caulking the joints between the tub and the floor tiles, the door and the vanity cabinet. Fill all these areas carefully, ensuring that there won’t be any space left unattended.
11. Finally, go ahead and apply your sealer. You can do this by using a sponge or a more convenient spray bottle. Don’t forget to wipe any excess sealer right away. Otherwise, it will stain your tiles.
