Clogged Kitchen Sink Remedies For The Homeowner

clogged kitchen sinkYou’re trying to save on electricity and water expenses so you decided to skip the dishwasher and clean your dishes manually in the sink. You scrape off the leftover food items, throw them into the garbage disposer and start scrubbing the plates with soap. Now time to rinse them off! You turn on the faucet and go on with your dishwashing then you realize, the sink has turned into a pool! So what do you do when water doesn’t flow into the drain? How do you fix clogged sinks? Before you panic and start dialing our number, let us give you some quick tips and tricks!

1. Get rid of the water first so you can check if there are just some leftover food items blocking the drain. Scoop out the water and dispose of it in the toilet or another working sink. Now look at the drain. If there are food crumbs, get them out of there. Turn on the faucet and see if the water will flow down smoothly.

2. If the blockage is still there, it’s time to try another method! Definitely, there’s something stuck inside your drain pipes so you’ll have to get rid of that first. We have always dismissed the use of toxic drain cleaners because they can and they will damage your pipes over time. Try baking soda and vinegar. Mix equal amounts in a container and pour it down the drain. Leave it in a few hours (although overnight gives better results) and check if the clog is gone. Otherwise, move on to the next tip!

3. Time to use your reliable plunger! Make sure that there’s enough water in the sink and remember that it should cover the rubber part of your plunger to work. When you’re ready, start plunging away in a consistent pace. Don’t plunge too hard though because it might worsen the problem.

4. Is the kitchen sink drain still not working properly? Use a plumbing snake! Remove the trap under the sink by using a screw driver. Detach the screws that connect the two pipes together and insert the snake there with a rotating movement. This will break the clog into tinier pieces or pull it out of the system.

5. If the clog still persists even with the use of a plumbing snake, check your vents. Air may not be flowing properly into the lines. If you have a double sink, cover the working drain first and work on the blocked opening with a plunger. This will prevent any pressure loss in the system which is one common cause of slow or blocked drains.
