What’s An Eco-friendly Home Remedy To Unclog Drains?

home remedy unclog drainA clogged drain is truly inconvenient for home and business owners. When you have a clogged sink drain, how can anyone in your home or office use the sink or the faucet in the first place? The thing is, clogs are quite inevitable. No matter how hard you try to avoid them, they will still arise during the time when you least expect them to. What’s important is that you fix the problem at the first sign of a blockage. Here are a few tried and test home remedies for unclogging drains!

1. Boiling Hot Water

Never underestimate the power of boiling hot water. In most cases, minor clogs are caused by grease which can be easily liquefied and flushed down by hot water. Simply pour a cup of your favorite dishwashing gel with grease-fighting feature then follow it up with a kettle of boiling hot water. That should liquefy the grease and remove the clog. If that doesn’t work, you can boost the hot water’s magic by wrapping a heating pad around the trap under the sink or by warming it up with a hair dryer before doing this method.

2. Good Old Baking Soda & Vinegar

This magnificent combination has been used by homeowners for years. Just get a cup of your preferred baking soda and pour it into the sink drain. Get a cup of your favorite white vinegar, too and pour it down as well. Plug the drain with an old cloth or rag right away and let the two ingredients chemically react. When there’s no more fizzing sound coming from the pipes, the unclogging is done.

3. Enzymatic Drain Cleaners

You may have heard of this from a neighbor and that’s because it is also widely used. However, note that enzymatic cleaners aren’t always available in the market because they are also harmful when ingested or when they get in direct contact with the eyes. They function by eating away on organic matter such as food substances, molds, algae and even hair strands. Also remember that these are not meant for nasty or stubborn clogs.

4. Salt, Vinegar and Borax

This combination is less popular than baking soda and vinegar but it provides the same result. Combine a cup of salt, a quarter cup of borax and half a cup of vinegar. Stir the ingredients to evenly distribute them then pour the mixture into the sink drain. Follow this up with boiling hot water, approximately a kettle, to wash the ingredients away.

5. Vinegar and Alka Seltzer Tablets

This dynamic duo works like baking soda and vinegar, too. Drop four Alka Seltzer tablets into the sink drain and then pour a cup of your preferred white vinegar. Plug the drain and let the two ingredients work their magic.
